Narasimha's Reveal

My latest project involved a new handmade screen print design.

I present Narasimha! One of the avatars of the Hindu deity Vishnu.

Narasimha ebru
I'm the avatar, you gotta deal with it.

He sits in strength. Containing the ferocity of a lion. With cunning wisdom and patients, he waits to strike down even the most defiant of demons.

I choose to hand paint my silkscreens. It is a process that can take a couple weeks to a month to do. This time allows me to really get in touch with the imagery and poor as much energy and intention into the design as I can.

I really like the handmade feel. To me it comes across as much more authentic and timeless.

While the first Narasimha piece had multiple layers of marbling, This one has different techniques added to the process, such as stenciling and a squeegee drag.

I was part of large group art show that happened in Portland. The show, "Burning Season 3",  contained a balanced mix of fine art and street art.

Local artist from Portland and artist from California and as far as Texas all came together to present a mind blowing event that included a unique blend of mediums and styles, with 2d and 3d art, body painting, an interactive graffiti art section, and live funk and hip hop music.

Marbling Mexico

I recently made a quick trip into Mexico for a live performance. JW Marriott asked me to perform at the grand opening of their new resort in Los Cabos.

It was a brand new beachfront resort. There was fancy lighting and live drummers everywhere, while Chelsea Rose and I were doing live marbling on a pair of 8 foot trays for onlookers.

I also produced an exclusive line of paper for JW Marriott to mark the occasion. The paper was made available to the guests who were invited to the opening.

Winter Shows

This winter I took part in a couple group art shows around Portland.

I made all new work to display for both shows. It was a blast working on mediums I don't always work with. The first show required me to work on wood panels for the first time. While the second show demanded vinyl records.

The Portland Big 500 is an annual group show featuring local artist working on identical wood panels. This show happens every year, but this was my first time participating.

Marbled wood panel

I actually really enjoyed working on wood panels. The pieces all came out great. Plus I sold over half the pieces I submitted.

I am definitely going to try doing more work on wood in the future. So keep an eye out for them.

Next was the vinyl show at Future Shock PDX. This was my second time taking part in the all vinyl record art show. But this year I utilized 45s.

The 45s were a fun twist on working with vinyl.

And so was the clock kit.

Some of the un-sold pieces will be available in my etsy shop if you are interested.

Button It

Everybody loves buttons. I have quite the collection myself.

However my collection has grown rather large since I started making ebru art buttons. You see, I recently got a button machine, and I find the process fun. Plus its a great use of my smaller marbled papers. But, well, its gotten out of hand.

Ebru Art Buttons
So many buttons!

I do have my favorites. It's amazing how much can fit on a space just bigger than an inch(1.25" to be exact).

I told you there are a lot of them

Luckily for all the button heads out there, the buttons are available on my etsy shop. Every button is made from unique original ebru paper. All the buttons have a pin backing so it can attach to just about anything you can poke with a pin.

I will have pieces featured in two "cash and carry" shows this December. The first one being the Vinyl Show, Which I also took part in last year. Its a group art show featuring only work on vinyl records. The Vinyl Show is held at Future Shock in Portland, Oregon.

The second show is the Portland Big 500. This is my first time partaking in this annual PDX tradition. It led me to working on wood panels for the first time. The Portland Big 500 is put on by The Peoples Gallery in Portland, Oregon.

I will likely do a blog on how those two shows after the holidays are over.

Marbling Workshops

I have hit that time of year where I am teaching one workshop after another.

The Loaded Brush, Portland, Oregon

For the last three months I have done at least one event every three weeks. Thats a lot of seats containing new marblers, both amazed and passionate about their new interest. Honestly, I couldn't be happier to share my passion, especially since its been so well received.

ASW's Catalyst Gallery, Orange County, California

I went back to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry for my forth year of the Portland Mini Maker Faire. Its fun introducing wee ones to marbling. At times the kids seems to grasp it better than the adults accompanying them.

We made prints with the Maker cat printed on them.

I do enjoy sharing the technique, but what about the people out of town who can't make it to one of the workshops.

Well, I have been thinking about that for a few months. I came to the conclusion to make a booklet as a start. The booklet details supplies, preparation, pattern design, and printing. You can buy the downloadable booklet here, and the printed booklet here.

The booklet was just the start though. I have also started making detailed video tutorials. The videos are all available on my Patreon.

Here's a sneak peak. Help me make more videos by supporting me on Patreon

Now I can share my how-to marbling workshop experience with people all over the world. And more importantly I can share it for a very accessible price. Because the magic of marbling should be for everyone. For as low as $1 a month you will have access to my marbling prep videos, and $5 a month for access to everything else, including marbling pattern, print effects, and more.

Come show your support and feed your interest.

Laughing All The Way

Switching things up from geometric masking to screen prints and stenciling. Variety is the key to life after all. Got to keep the process fresh and make the most of my work.

Laughing Buddha, Hotei, Budai, the Future Buddha. No matter how you know him, he is a pure symbol of contentment and the essence of Zen. However he was always humble, gaining joy from his work and not asking for much more from life.

Laughing Buddha
Just for a laugh.

I spent a couple weeks painting the design into the screen mesh.

painting the screen

Once I had the screen all painted in and ready for printing, I was ready to marble some paper. After a great marbling session I made some test prints of the Laughing buddha. Then I cut out the silhouette of the design from the test prints, and that was how I made the stencil for the color fill on the Laughing Buddha. I used some Montana spray paint to fill in the color. Then lined up my screen and started printing.

The big reveal.

How do you Zen.

It's Time To Triangle

Yeah, I have been on another Geometry kick lately. Lots and lots of triangles.

The fun thing about geometry kicks is all the cool mosaic patterns I can make. I have been using my stencil/masking technique with layers of ebru to create these geo-mosaic patterns.

Triangles are often associated with creativity, harmony, proportion, manifestation, illumination, and ascension. Plus triangles are inseparable with the number three. Linking triangles to all the great mythos and disciplines of the world.
