Auspicious Art

I'm back with another screen print and paper marbling mixed media design. The goal this time was to create a beautiful goddess. The Hindu Goddess Lakshmi to be precise.

Lakshmi Ebru
A sign of auspicious fortune!

The Goddess Lakshmi represents luck, wealth, and beauty. People look to Lakshmi to lead them to both material and spiritual prosperity.

After making the screen print and ebru mixed media pieces I grabbed my stencils and spray paint and made some mixed media pieces of a different variety. I have been enjoying finding ways to include the new transparent spray paints into my art. Since Lakshmi is associated with wealth and gold I used my transparent yellow paint to enhance the design.

Masks

I am doing a lot of masking.

I started by drawing up some images. I then turned the drawings I liked in to designs that I could cut out. Then the cut up designs were used as masking while taking the ebru mono-print. The masking is then removed to reveal the final image.

The Lotus flower is a symbol of perseverance and enlightenment. The Lotus is a flower that rises out of the mud to bring beauty to the world with its presence and harmony to the mind with its essence.

The lotus is also associated with beauty, fertility, prosperity, spirituality, and eternity

I also created a design with Shiva's Trishula and a sanskrit Shiva prayer.

You might notice that two of these pieces have a very fine combed pattern. I recently spoiled myself with a new super fine toothed comb. I don't know how I went so long without it.

Ganesh And The Flower Of Life

My latest project is a three headed Ganesh with marigolds.

I started this project in September during Ganesha Chaturthi and spent three months working on it. This is the second Ganesh design I have made. However this design is much different then the single headed full body image of my first Ganesh.

new Ganesh screen
Ganesh is hailed as the mover of obstacles, patron of the arts, and protecter of the downtrodden.

The project required many steps, starting with a large ebru mono-print that covered the paper.

This freeform marbling will become the background.

While normally I save the screen printing for last, this project required a change in process. I needed to screen print at this point of the project so I could have a guide when placing the mask over the four big marigold flowers.

Marigolds are known mostly as a symbol of creativity and passion. However Marigold also helps with herbal healing, and is a botanical protector in the garden.

I glued paper cut-outs down over the screen print. Then I went back to the tray for a second layer of ebru.

The paper mask protects the covered area from the second layer of color.

I remove the mask during the rinse the paper receives after I pull it from the tray. Once the paper dries it's finished

But there is more!

I also finished a second version of the piece.

This second piece took three times longer then the first to produce. The reason being, I decided it is time to take my work up to the next level. I am attempting to do so by embellishing the second layer of ebru with a masked pattern.

I appointed the flower of life pattern for this piece. This popular sacred geometry pattern of unity contains all the fundamental forms of life.

Ebru India

I recently brought my live ebru art to India.

Techniche 2012 - Ebru Performance

I was invited to do a live ebru performance at IIT Guwahati's annual tech fest, Techniche.
A 3 day event filled with robots, lasers, and lectures, Techniche 2012 also offered artistic entertainment in the evenings.

Indica Ebru.

The performance was about a hour and half long. During which I made some detailed patterns, flowers, peacock feathers, birds, and an om symbol.

Techniche 2012 - Ebru Papers

Heres what they had to say about me, "As the paint droplets swirl and twirl on the liquid, the realization that art is forever expanding and always surprising hits you gently. This art of creating marbled paper using impressions drawn from viscous liquid dates back to the 15th century, yet its beauty seems current. Danny Rodriguez is a new-age proponent of Ebru Art who combines the ancient turkish art with modern techniques to create an end-result that never ceases to amaze."

As an added bonus, a couple nights later I set up a DIY ebru booth and gave some Techniche goers the chance to experience ebru first hand.

When I was done performing I relaxed and enjoyed my visit, while finding my way to a couple of the local temples of Guwahati, India.
