The Dreamer

I took a small break from large masking projects to work on a new screen print design.

If life is a dream, this is the dreamer. With eyes closed and the third eye open, in a state of enlightened omnipotents.

Mahadev Ebru Art
We are the dream and the dreamers

The design is inspired by Sri Shiva. The Mahadev, Shiva is All and is in all. Shiva is the Tantric Revealer of all that is.

For this project I decided to do a stencil layer in place of a second screen print layer or second marbling layer. I cut a stencil of the silhouette shape and used to lay down a fill color with spray paint. I would then screen print the design on top of the painted silhouette.

While working on this project I discovered the new Montana 94 transparent spray paint colors. I really like the way they look, and I love that I don't lose the marbling behind the design.

Big Time

I recently decided to try to make my masked patterns on a larger scale. My normal dimensions for masking projects is 8"x 10" or 11"x 14". I have been working in those sizes for years, but the urge to go bigger was ever present. So, I started cutting some big masks, and started a dynamic collection of large ebru art originals.

Paper Mask

The dimensions I'm working with now is 18"x 24". I used to only marble paper this size for my screen print projects. Now I am quite comfortable masking marbled patterns at this size too.

Three of the big ebru pieces are mandalas. With two of them being chakra mandala interpretations. Plus a new large Sri Yantra mandala. I intend to make a chakra mandala for each of the primary seven chakras.

I'm going to keep working on big pieces. I want to finish up the chakra mandalas, and I have a few patterns in mind for future pieces too.

I really liked cutting on a larger scale. However I will still be making the smaller original sizes too. I love how much detail is packed into to the patterns of the smaller sizes.

Masks

I am doing a lot of masking.

I started by drawing up some images. I then turned the drawings I liked in to designs that I could cut out. Then the cut up designs were used as masking while taking the ebru mono-print. The masking is then removed to reveal the final image.

The Lotus flower is a symbol of perseverance and enlightenment. The Lotus is a flower that rises out of the mud to bring beauty to the world with its presence and harmony to the mind with its essence.

The lotus is also associated with beauty, fertility, prosperity, spirituality, and eternity

I also created a design with Shiva's Trishula and a sanskrit Shiva prayer.

You might notice that two of these pieces have a very fine combed pattern. I recently spoiled myself with a new super fine toothed comb. I don't know how I went so long without it.

Narasimha's Reveal

My latest project involved a new handmade screen print design.

I present Narasimha! One of the avatars of the Hindu deity Vishnu.

Narasimha ebru
I'm the avatar, you gotta deal with it.

He sits in strength. Containing the ferocity of a lion. With cunning wisdom and patients, he waits to strike down even the most defiant of demons.

Narasimha silkscreen WIP

I choose to hand paint my silkscreens. It is a process that can take a couple weeks to a month to do. This time allows me to really get in touch with the imagery and poor as much energy and intention into the design as I can.

I really like the handmade feel. To me it comes across as much more authentic and timeless.

While the first Narasimha piece had multiple layers of marbling, This one has different techniques added to the process, such as stenciling and a squeegee drag.

I was part of large group art show that happened in Portland. The show, "Burning Season 3",  contained a balanced mix of fine art and street art.

Local artist from Portland and artist from California and as far as Texas all came together to present a mind blowing event that included a unique blend of mediums and styles, with 2d and 3d art, body painting, an interactive graffiti art section, and live funk and hip hop music.

Marbling Mexico

I recently made a quick trip into Mexico for a live performance. JW Marriott asked me to perform at the grand opening of their new resort in Los Cabos.

It was a brand new beachfront resort. There was fancy lighting and live drummers everywhere, while Chelsea Rose and I were doing live marbling on a pair of 8 foot trays for onlookers.

I also produced an exclusive line of paper for JW Marriott to mark the occasion. The paper was made available to the guests who were invited to the opening.

Winter Shows

This winter I took part in a couple group art shows around Portland.

I made all new work to display for both shows. It was a blast working on mediums I don't always work with. The first show required me to work on wood panels for the first time. While the second show demanded vinyl records.

The Portland Big 500 is an annual group show featuring local artist working on identical wood panels. This show happens every year, but this was my first time participating.

Marbled wood panel

I actually really enjoyed working on wood panels. The pieces all came out great. Plus I sold over half the pieces I submitted.

I am definitely going to try doing more work on wood in the future. So keep an eye out for them.

Next was the vinyl show at Future Shock PDX. This was my second time taking part in the all vinyl record art show. But this year I utilized 45s.

The 45s were a fun twist on working with vinyl.

And so was the clock kit.

Some of the un-sold pieces will be available in my etsy shop if you are interested.

Button It

Everybody loves buttons. I have quite the collection myself.

However my collection has grown rather large since I started making ebru art buttons. You see, I recently got a button machine, and I find the process fun. Plus its a great use of my smaller marbled papers. But, well, its gotten out of hand.

Ebru Art Buttons
So many buttons!

I do have my favorites. It's amazing how much can fit on a space just bigger than an inch(1.25" to be exact).

I told you there are a lot of them

Luckily for all the button heads out there, the buttons are available on my etsy shop. Every button is made from unique original ebru paper. All the buttons have a pin backing so it can attach to just about anything you can poke with a pin.

In Other News

I will have pieces featured in two "cash and carry" shows this December. The first one being the Vinyl Show, Which I also took part in last year. Its a group art show featuring only work on vinyl records. The Vinyl Show is held at Future Shock in Portland, Oregon.

The second show is the Portland Big 500. This is my first time partaking in this annual PDX tradition. It led me to working on wood panels for the first time. The Portland Big 500 is put on by The Peoples Gallery in Portland, Oregon.

I will likely do a blog on how those two shows after the holidays are over.

----Workshops----

There will be two tee-shirt marbling workshop at the Loaded Brush in December. The first workshop is on December 12th. If you can't make that date, than how about December 21st. Register for a seat at The Loaded Brush.
